If you wish to know if someone is truly your friend, please consider this.
Imagine a tree. Imagine that this tree genuinely is a tree, and is not "an elephant pretending to be a tree as a part of some elaborate deception". No matter how much you yell at the tree, hit the tree, or drive nails into the tree -- you can not "force the tree to turn back into an elephant" because it never was an elephant in the first place.
When someone genuinely is your friend, you can say as many cruel things to them as you want to in an attempt to get them to "prove that they were never your friend in the first place and it was all just some elaborate deception" and all you will accomplish, is hurting a true friend who still won't stop loving you no matter how many cruel things you say to them. It hurts because they love you and its not a switch they can turn off or that you can force them to turn off.
They will always be your friend, they just can't force you to always be their friend. They take this risk with you knowing this fully. They can not do otherwise. They can only do their best to learn to be at peace with the fact that the only thing they have control over, is themselves.
